Encountering Issues While Opening Hybrid Configuration Wizard - HCW  Files HCW Files: A Troubleshooting Guide

Opening HCW files can sometimes be a challenging task, especially when unexpected errors arise. Recently, I encountered a series of issues while trying to open an HCW file, and I wanted to share my experience and the steps I took to resolve these problems.

Cannot Start Application

The first error I faced was a "Cannot Start Application" message. This error indicated that the application was missing required files and suggested contacting the application vendor for assistance.

Upon clicking the "Details" button, I received the following error summary:

ERROR SUMMARY
Below is a summary of the errors, details of these errors are listed later in the log.
* Activation of C:\Users\administrator.CLOUDMONKEYS\Downloads\Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client (1).application resulted in exception. Following failure messages were detected:
    + Downloading file:///C:/Users/administrator.CLOUDMONKEYS/Downloads/Application Files/Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client_17_1_1321_0/Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client.exe.manifest did not succeed.
+ Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Users\administrator.CLOUDMONKEYS\Downloads/Application Files\Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client_17_1_1321_0/Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client.exe.manifest'.
+ Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Users\administrator.CLOUDMONKEYS\Downloads/Application Files\Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client_17_1_1321_0/Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client.exe.manifest'.
+ Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Users\administrator.CLOUDMONKEYS\Downloads/Application Files\Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client_17_1_1321_0/Microsoft.Online.CSE.Hybrid.Client.exe.manifest'.

This error summary indicates that the application was unable to download the necessary manifest file due to missing parts of the path. This can happen if the files were not properly downloaded or if they were moved or deleted.

Solution: Using a Google Chrome Extension

After some research, I found that installing a Google Chrome extension can help resolve this issue. The Cegid Peopleonet ClickOnce launcher extension allows you to run any external application with custom arguments directly from the browser. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Install the Extension:

    • Open Google Chrome and go to the Chrome Web Store.
    • Search for "Cegid Peopleonet ClickOnce launcher" and click on the extension.
    • Click "Add to Chrome" to install the extension.
  2. Configure the Extension:

    • After installation, a pop-up window will appear asking for permissions. The extension requires permissions to read and change data on all websites, manage downloads, and communicate with cooperating native applications. Click "Add extension" to proceed.
  3. Confirmation:

    • Once the extension is installed, you will see a confirmation pop-up indicating that the helper for the "Cegid Peoplenet ClickOnce launcher" extension was installed successfully. Click "OK" to close the pop-up.
  4. Final Resolution:

    • After installing the extension, I was able to open the HCW file successfully. The "Open File - Security Warning" dialog box appeared, allowing me to run the Microsoft Online 365 Hybrid Client.exe application. This final step confirmed that the issue was resolved.
